Olfactory receptor family 12 subfamily D member 2 (OR12D2) is a member of the large olfactory receptor family, which are G protein-coupled receptors located mainly in the olfactory epithelium of the nose[1][4][5][9]. These receptors interact with odorant molecules to initiate neuronal responses, leading to the perception of smell. OR12D2, like other olfactory receptors, possesses a seven-transmembrane domain structure and mediates the recognition and G protein-coupled transduction of odorant signals[1][5][9]. The gene is noted to be a segregating pseudogene in humans, so in some individuals, it encodes a functional protein, while in others it is predicted to be non-functional[1]. Olfactory receptors, including OR12D2, are not typical therapeutic targets, nor are drugs known to interact specifically with them. However, rare genetic variation in OR12D2 has been linked in some studies to disease phenotypes such as retinitis pigmentosa 6[1].
