Overview

Olfactory receptor family 12 subfamily D member 3 (OR12D3) is a protein-coding gene in humans that encodes a member of the olfactory receptor family, which are G protein-coupled receptors responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nose[1][3][4][5][6]. OR12D3 shares the characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure of GPCRs and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome[1][3][5]. Although primarily involved in olfaction, genetic variants in OR12D3 have been associated in genome-wide association studies with a variety of phenotypes and diseases, including cancer, autoimmune and neuropsychiatric disorders, and other complex traits[1]. There are no known drugs directly targeting OR12D3, and its direct therapeutic potential is not currently established, but it remains a biologically relevant receptor as part of odorant signaling and as a locus associated with disease susceptibility.
