Overview

Olfactory receptor family 13 subfamily C member 1 pseudogene (abbreviated as OR13C1P and also known as OR37M) is a human pseudogene belonging to the large family of olfactory receptor genes. Unlike functional olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) involved in odorant detection, OR13C1P is classified as a pseudogene because it contains mutations (such as frameshifts or premature stop codons) that prevent it from encoding a functional protein. These mutations presumably arose due to reduced evolutionary pressure to maintain functionality, as often observed in olfactory receptor gene families. OR13C1P does not have a documented biological function, disease association, or known interactions with drugs, and is not considered a therapeutic target. Pseudogenes like OR13C1P are widely found in olfactory receptor gene clusters due to the high redundancy of this gene family in humans. While most pseudogenes are non-functional, some rare cases in other species show that certain pseudogene transcripts can have regulatory functions or even code for functional proteins through mechanisms such as translational read-through, but there is no evidence that this applies to human OR13C1P. OR13C1P is located on human chromosome 9 and is annotated in multiple gene databases as a pseudogene.
