Overview

Olfactory receptor family 13 subfamily C member 2 (OR13C2) is a human odorant receptor protein and gene that belongs to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, characterized by a seven-transmembrane domain structure. OR13C2 is part of the largest gene family in the human genome, with thousands of members dedicated to recognizing volatile molecules in the environment and initiating an olfactory neuronal response. These receptors are expressed primarily in the olfactory epithelium and function by transducing chemical information (odorants) into electrical signals via G protein-mediated pathways. OR13C2 is one of hundreds of human olfactory receptors, each with unique but overlapping ligand specificities, largely contributing to the diversity and sensitivity of human smell perception. There is no direct evidence of a role for OR13C2 in nonolfactory diseases or as a drug target, though the olfactory receptor family is under investigation for broader physiological relevance.
