Overview

Olfactory receptor family 13 subfamily J member 1 (OR13J1) is a human protein encoded by the OR13J1 gene. It belongs to the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure[1][5]. These receptors are found primarily in the olfactory epithelium, where they bind odorant molecules in the nasal cavity, initiating signal transduction via G proteins to trigger neuronal responses and the perception of smell[1][2][5]. Olfactory receptors arise from single coding-exon genes and collectively form the largest gene family in the human genome[1]. Beyond olfaction, recent research suggests that some olfactory receptors may have functions in other tissues, though specific roles for OR13J1 outside of olfaction remain uncharacterized[4]. There are no known drugs directly targeting OR13J1, and it is not currently considered a major therapeutic target.
