Overview

The olfactory receptor family 13 subfamily Z member 1 pseudogene (OR13Z1P) is annotated as a pseudogene belonging to the large family of olfactory receptors. Olfactory receptors are classically responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose and initiating olfactory signaling, but pseudogenes in this family are distinguished by mutations (such as nonsense or frameshift mutations) that result in non-functional or non-coding sequences[2]. While the vast majority of olfactory receptor pseudogenes—including those in humans—do not encode active proteins, certain rare examples in other species can be transcribed, and even translated due to phenomena such as translational readthrough. However, there is no evidence in the scientific literature or major databases for OR13Z1P encoding a functional protein in humans, nor for a disease role, biomarker status, or drug interaction. The OR13Z1P gene is a pseudogene and as such, is not considered a viable therapeutic target (i.e., it is not a functional receptor, enzyme, transporter, or similar entity)[2]. Pseudogenes in olfactory receptor families are common in humans and reflect the reduced evolutionary pressure to maintain many individual olfactory sensing genes[2]. There are no drugs, mechanisms of action, biomarker uses, or safety concerns associated with this pseudogene. There is no evidence of common misspelling or confusion about identity, but the primary issue is that this is not a canonical drug target, as it does not produce a protein product involved in classical signaling[2].
