Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily A member 13 pseudogene (OR2A13P) is classified as a pseudogene in the human genome, meaning it is a gene fragment or sequence that resembles a typical olfactory receptor gene but is not believed to produce a functional protein. Olfactory receptors as a superfamily are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure, responsible for detecting odorants and initiating neuronal signals for smell perception. However, pseudogenes like OR2A13P are presumed non-functional, typically due to mutations such as frameshifts or premature stop codons rendering the encoded product inactive. There are no known direct roles for OR2A13P in physiology or disease, nor are there drugs or biomarkers linked to this gene[1][2][4][6]. A large portion of olfactory receptor family members in humans are pseudogenes resulting from evolutionary processes and low selection pressure to retain certain odor detection capacity[5]. Although some animal pseudogenes in this gene family may exceptionally retain function, there is no known evidence of such for human OR2A13P[5][1][2].
