Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily A member 5 (OR2A5) is a member of the large olfactory receptor (OR) family in humans, which belongs to the class A G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily[1][2][3][5]. These receptors are responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating neuronal responses that enable the perception of smell[1][2][3][5]. OR2A5 shares the characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure seen in other GPCRs[1][4]. While its main function relates to the sense of smell, emerging research on olfactory receptors as a group suggests roles outside the olfactory system in tissues such as brain and pancreas[2]; however, no specific extranasal or disease association is yet established for OR2A5. This gene is not currently a direct therapeutic target, has no known interacting drugs, and is not used as a biomarker or associated with safety concerns.
