Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily A member 9 pseudogene (OR2A9P) is a human genomic locus originally derived from a single-exon olfactory receptor gene. While functional olfactory receptors are G protein-coupled receptors involved in the detection of odorant molecules, OR2A9P is annotated as a pseudogene due to mutations that have rendered it nonfunctional—it does not encode an active receptor protein. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, and a majority are predicted pseudogenes. OR2A9P may retain sequence similarity with active olfactory receptor genes, but it does not participate in odorant signal transduction or other receptor-related biological processes. This pseudogene, like many others, may still be transcribed and have potential regulatory effects at the RNA level, but there is no evidence for a direct, functional role in olfaction, disease, or drug targeting.
