Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily AE member 1 (OR2AE1) is a protein in humans encoded by the OR2AE1 gene[1][3][8]. Like other olfactory receptors, it is expressed in the olfactory epithelium where it binds odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a signaling cascade via G protein-mediated transduction that ultimately triggers neuronal responses and gives rise to odor perception[1][3][7][8][9]. OR2AE1 is a typical class A (rhodopsin-like) GPCR with a seven-transmembrane domain architecture. Olfactory receptors as a group constitute the largest gene family in the human genome. There is currently no known involvement of OR2AE1 in human disease nor evidence that it is targeted by approved drugs or used as a biomarker[1][3][9]. Its primary and specific biological function is in sensory signaling for olfaction.

Disease associations

No direct role associated with disease pathogenesis reported for OR2AE1; some olfactory receptors have roles outside the olfactory system, but this has not been specifically documented for OR2AE1
