Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily AG member 1 (OR2AG1) is a member of the large olfactory receptor family, which consists of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) characterized by a 7-transmembrane domain structure. These receptors are responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating a signal transduction cascade that results in the perception of smell. The OR2AG1 gene encodes a protein involved in odorant signal recognition, sharing structural features with neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. Notably, this gene can behave as a segregating pseudogene in the population, meaning some alleles encode functional protein while others are non-functional. While OR2AG1 may be associated with certain non-olfactory syndromes, there is currently no evidence of it being directly targeted by therapeutic drugs or used as a biomarker in clinical settings.
