Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily AJ member 1 (abbreviated as OR2AJ1) is a protein-coding gene that produces an olfactory receptor. Members of the olfactory receptor family are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that recognize odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell. OR2AJ1 shares a 7-transmembrane domain structure typical of GPCRs, is encoded by a single exon, and is part of the largest gene family in the human genome. Olfactory receptors display broad ligand affinity: each is activated by multiple odorants, while individual odorants may activate several receptors. They function via G protein-mediated mechanisms, leading to signal transduction and neuronal activation.
