Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily AK member 2 (OR2AK2) is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) expressed primarily in the nasal olfactory epithelium. These receptors have a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain architecture and are responsible for detecting odorant molecules, initiating G protein-mediated signal transduction that leads to the perception of smell. Olfactory receptors are encoded by single coding-exon genes and represent the largest gene family in the human genome. While most OR2AK2 activity is presumed to be in the context of olfaction, some evidence suggests potential, but not well-defined, roles in extranasal tissues. There are no known drugs, biomarkers, or clinical safety concerns related to this receptor.
