Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily B member 8 (OR2B8) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family, which encodes G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for odorant signal detection and transduction in the olfactory epithelium. These receptors possess a characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure and mediate perception of smell by recognizing and binding diverse odorant molecules, which activates G protein signaling cascades leading to neuronal depolarization and transmission of olfactory information to the brain. Humans have approximately 400 functional olfactory receptor genes, while many others are classified as pseudogenes. There is evidence that OR2B8 is annotated as a gene/pseudogene, with limited or no robust evidence supporting the expression of a functional protein. OR2B8 is not considered a therapeutic target, nor are there any established drugs, biomarkers, or safety concerns associated with this target.
