Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily C member 1 (OR2C1) is a protein-coding gene that encodes an olfactory receptor belonging to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily[1][8]. This receptor is expressed in the olfactory epithelium, where it binds odorant molecules, particularly organosulfur compounds with thioether groups such as (methylthio)methanethiol (MTMT), as well as odorants like acetophenone and benzaldehyde[1][5][8]. Upon ligand binding, OR2C1 activates intracellular G proteins that stimulate adenylyl cyclase, leading to downstream neuronal signaling and the perception of smell[1][8]. Olfactory receptors, including OR2C1, share a conventional 7-transmembrane domain structure common to many GPCRs[1][3][4][8]. There is no evidence for disease association, use as a therapeutic target, or direct drug interactions for OR2C1 in the major biomedical databases.
