Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily D member 2 (OR2D2) is a human G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) encoded by the OR2D2 gene, primarily expressed in the olfactory epithelium. Like other members of the olfactory receptor family, OR2D2 possesses a 7-transmembrane domain structure and functions by interacting with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating G protein-mediated intracellular signal transduction and triggering neuronal responses that result in the perception of smell. OR2D2 is one of a very large family of olfactory receptors comprising the largest gene family in the human genome. Its main paralog is OR2D3. While olfactory receptors, as a class, are not traditionally considered therapeutic targets, research has begun to uncover their unexpected roles in non-olfactory tissues and potential implications for health, though no such association is currently described for OR2D2 specifically.
