Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily G member 1 pseudogene (OR2G1P) is a non-functional pseudogene within the olfactory receptor gene family in humans. Olfactory receptors typically encode members of the G protein-coupled receptor superfamily with seven transmembrane domains involved in detecting odor molecules, but pseudogenes like OR2G1P do not produce functional odorant receptors due to accumulated mutations in their coding regions. While most human olfactory receptor genes are functional, a substantial portion are pseudogenes, and recent research suggests some pseudogenes generate non-coding RNAs (such as long non-coding RNAs) or participate in indirect regulatory roles affecting the expression of protein-coding genes, but such a function has not yet been attributed to OR2G1P specifically. OR2G1P is a standard human pseudogene with canonical gene nomenclature, primarily referenced for research on olfactory receptor evolution and non-coding RNA biology, but it is not used therapeutically or diagnostically and does not encode a functional protein.
