Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily H member 2 (OR2H2) is a protein-coding gene located on human chromosome 6. It encodes a member of the olfactory receptor family, which comprises the largest gene family in the human genome. OR2H2 is a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) with a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure shared with many other neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. Its main biological function is mediating the initial molecular recognition and transduction of odorant signals via G protein pathways, thereby playing a critical role in the perception of smell in the nasal olfactory epithelium. Although olfactory receptors have been increasingly implicated in extranasal physiological processes, direct therapeutic interest or drug targeting for OR2H2 is currently not known. Various aliases for this protein exist due to differing nomenclature conventions (e.g., FAT11, OLFR2, OR2H3). Disease associations noted in genome-wide studies include several cancers and neurological conditions, but direct mechanistic links are speculative.
