Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily H member 5 pseudogene (OR2H5P) is a non-functional gene segment in humans classified as a pseudogene, arising from mutations in the ancestral gene that once encoded a G protein-coupled olfactory receptor. Olfactory receptors typically play a role in the detection of odorant molecules and initiation of the neuronal signals responsible for the sense of smell. However, as a pseudogene, OR2H5P does not produce a functional receptor protein and is not involved in odor detection or signal transduction. Like most human olfactory receptor pseudogenes, OR2H5P is not considered to have any direct biological or disease-related function; it is instead regarded as an evolutionary remnant reflecting changes in olfactory sensory requirements over time[3][4][5]. Occasionally, olfactory receptor pseudogenes have been described with vestigial or regulatory potential, but no such function is described or experimentally supported for OR2H5P[3][4][5].
