Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily I member 1 (OR2I1) is a gene from the large family of olfactory receptor genes responsible for detecting odorant molecules and mediating signal transduction through G protein-coupled receptor pathways. Like other olfactory receptors, these proteins typically possess seven transmembrane domains and convert chemical detection into neuronal signals for smell perception. However, OR2I1 is believed to be a pseudogene in humans, with no established protein product or biological function. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, but many encoded genes–including OR2I1–are thought inactive or have unclear roles in sensory biology. There is no evidence linking OR2I1 to disease causation, therapeutic utility, or drug interaction. The multiplicity of aliases and pseudogene designations noted for OR2I1/OR2I2/OR2I3/OR2I4/OR2I5/OR2I6/OR2I7/OR2I8/OR2I9 reflects genomic complexity and annotation ambiguity rather than established functional diversity.
