Overview

Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily L member 5 (OR2L5) is a human G protein-coupled receptor primarily expressed in the olfactory epithelium, where it binds odorant molecules in the nose to initiate signal transduction resulting in smell perception. Like other olfactory receptors, OR2L5 is a member of the class A (rhodopsin-like) GPCR superfamily and possesses a seven-transmembrane domain structure. The human olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, responsible for recognizing a wide variety of odorant molecules. While the principal role of OR2L5 is in olfactory signal detection, recent studies indicate that some olfactory receptors may have functions in non-olfactory tissues and possibly contribute to disease processes, but specific functions or disease links for OR2L5 remain uncharacterized.
