Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily M member 2 (OR2M2) is a member of the olfactory receptor (OR) superfamily, which are class A G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) expressed primarily in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity, where they mediate the detection of volatile odorant molecules through activation of intracellular signaling pathways[2][3]. Human ORs are the largest gene family in the genome, responsible for the diversity of smell perception. OR2M2, like other ORs, is a seven-transmembrane domain receptor that activates G proteins upon ligand (odorant) binding, leading to a cAMP-dependent signaling cascade. While olfactory receptors have canonical roles in smell, some are ectopically expressed in other tissues and may participate in additional physiological processes, though the functional roles of OR2M2 outside olfaction remain unclear[2][3]. There are no well-established small molecule drugs targeting OR2M2 for therapeutic uses, and its role as a biomarker or safety concern is undeveloped, reflecting its primary specialized function in olfaction.
