Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily M member 3 (OR2M3) is a human G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) that functions as an odorant receptor, primarily expressed in the olfactory epithelium. OR2M3 is highly specific and responds almost exclusively to the key food odorant 3-mercapto-2-methylpentan-1-ol, which is a low-threshold thiol compound found in onions and detected at very low concentrations. OR2M3 contains the canonical seven transmembrane domains typical of all olfactory GPCRs and mediates signal transduction events leading to odor perception[1][3][4][6]. This receptor is highly tuned and has a modern human-specific chemosensory role in food odorant detection, with gene family relationships and structures conserved among the GPCR superfamily[1][4][6]. There is no evidence linking OR2M3 with therapeutic drug targeting, known drug interactions, or disease processes beyond general olfaction; as a result, it is not considered a traditional drug target nor a disease biomarker[1][3][4][5][6].
