Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily M member 4 (OR2M4) is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a canonical seven-transmembrane domain structure[2][4][5]. These receptors are responsible for the recognition of odorant molecules in the nose and the transduction of this binding event into neuronal signals, which are relayed to the brain as smell perception. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome and is highly diverse, with each receptor exhibiting selectivity for different odorant molecules[1][2][8]. OR2M4 is a protein-coding gene with functional annotation for olfactory receptor activity and is implicated in olfactory signaling pathways[2][8]. Though primarily involved in the sense of smell, some olfactory receptors—potentially including OR2M4—have been reported in non-olfactory tissues, but their physiological significance outside the olfactory epithelium remains largely undefined[6]. There are no known drugs approved or in development that selectively target OR2M4, and its primary biological function is in sensory signal transduction, not as a conventional therapeutic target.
