Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily M member 5 (OR2M5), also referred to as olfactory receptor 2M5 or OR2M5P, is classified as a pseudogene in humans. Olfactory receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily responsible for the detection of odorant molecules and subsequent signal transduction leading to the perception of smell[5][1]. However, OR2M5 lacks functional protein-coding capacity and is annotated as a pseudogene, meaning it does not produce a functional olfactory receptor protein and is not involved in olfactory signal transduction. There is no evidence for its physiological function, involvement in disease, or utility as a drug target. Most human olfactory receptor genes are part of the large GPCR family and function in odorant detection as described for other ORs such as OR51E2, but not all are functional; pseudogenes like OR2M5 do not produce active proteins[1][5]. The notation "P" in OR2M5P further reflects its pseudogene status. No literature indicates druggability, disease associations, or therapeutic relevance for OR2M5 specifically. There is some confusion in naming, as the gene is often cited both as "OR2M5" and "OR2M5P." The correct canonical designation in humans is as a pseudogene, not a functional GPCR or therapeutic target. There are no known functional orthologs in humans or indications that this receptor is expressed or active. OR2M5 is not a therapeutic target and has no functional protein product in humans.
