Unlike functional olfactory receptor genes, this gene contains mutations making it a pseudogene; it does not produce a functional receptor protein. Olfactory receptor genes encode G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with seven transmembrane domains that typically detect odorant molecules in the nose, initiating the sense of smell[1][4]. The high prevalence of olfactory receptor pseudogenes in humans reflects a reduction in olfactory capabilities compared to other mammals. OR2N1P and its related aliases (e.g., OR6-7, OLFR89) fall within this non-coding, non-functional category and do not have direct therapeutic, disease, or biomarker roles; nor are they drug targets[1][4].
