Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily U member 1 pseudogene (OR2U1P) is classified as a pseudogene in the human genome[3][7]. While functional olfactory receptors are members of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily and mediate the detection of odorant molecules in the olfactory epithelium[1][4][3][7], OR2U1P itself is considered non-functional due to mutations or sequence interruptions, and does not produce an active receptor protein. Pseudogenes like OR2U1P typically lack recognized biological activity or therapeutic relevance and do not have known drug interactions or disease associations in humans[3][7][5]. Olfactory receptor pseudogenes are abundant in mammalian genomes and arise because some receptors lose functionality either due to evolutionary redundancy or lack of selective pressure for olfactory cues that are no longer relevant[5]. Although rare cases of "pseudo-pseudogenes" can have regulatory or functional readthrough properties in some species[5], there is no reported evidence suggesting that OR2U1P produces a functional olfactory receptor protein in humans[3][7]. Thus, it is not a therapeutic target or biomarker.
