Olfactory receptor family 2 subfamily V member 1 (OR2V1) is a protein in humans encoded by the OR2V1 gene. It is a member of the olfactory receptor superfamily, part of the class A G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs), and is responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose, initiating neuronal responses that lead to smell perception. Olfactory receptors like OR2V1 are characterized by their seven-transmembrane domain structure and mediate the initial events of the olfactory signaling pathway through G protein activation and downstream signaling cascades. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome. There is some historical confusion over whether OR2V1 is a functional gene or a pseudogene; current genomic evidence suggests that it is functional[3][5][4][7]. OR2V1 functions specifically in the nasal olfactory epithelium and may have expression in extranasal tissues, though its functional role outside the sense of smell (if any) is not well characterized[7]. There are currently no clinical drugs or therapies directly targeting this receptor, and its primary physiological role is in chemosensory detection. Note: The gene and protein designations have sometimes been conflated with pseudogene versions (e.g., OR2V1P), but multiple authoritative sources currently list OR2V1 as protein-coding and potentially functional[4][5].
