Overview

Olfactory receptor family 3 subfamily A member 2 (OR3A2) is a protein encoded by the OR3A2 gene in humans. OR3A2 belongs to the large family of olfactory receptors, which are G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure. These receptors are responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating G protein-mediated signal transduction that results in the perception of smell. Like other olfactory receptors, it interacts with various odorant molecules, leading to neuronal activation and subsequent odor recognition. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, with hundreds of genes encoding proteins that share similar structure and function. There is currently no evidence for therapeutic targeting, drug interaction, or biomarker relevance for OR3A2 specifically. Its main biological role is mediating olfactory signal transduction, and while the general olfactory receptor family has potential links to neurodegenerative disorders, OR3A2 itself is not directly implicated in any disease.
