Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily A member 15 (OR4A15)

Target
OR4A15
Molecular classification
G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR), Receptor, Transmembrane protein
01

Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily A member 15 (OR4A15) is a G protein-coupled receptor present in the human olfactory epithelium. It interacts with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal signals responsible for the perception of smell. OR4A15 is part of the largest gene family in the human genome and shares a seven-transmembrane domain structure with neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. Its canonical role is in signal transduction for olfactory sensation, acting as a chemosensory receptor. While olfactory receptors are now known to have some nonolfactory physiological roles, OR4A15's characterized function is specific to odor recognition, and it is not currently a known drug target or disease biomarker.

Mechanism of action

No therapeutic agents targeting OR4A15; natural activation is through odorant molecule binding and G protein signaling

03

Biological functions

Signal transductionRecognition of odorant moleculesActivation of neuronal response for perception of smell
04

Disease associations

No direct disease role for OR4A15 reported; some olfactory receptors have been linked to nonolfactory physiological processes and may have indirect roles in disease, but this is not established for OR4A15 specifically
