Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily A member 21 pseudogene (OR4A21P) is a non-coding gene classified as a pseudogene. The true olfactory receptor proteins are part of a large family of G protein-coupled receptors that detect odorants, but OR4A21P itself does not code for a functional protein[1][3]. Pseudogenes in the olfactory receptor gene family arise due to gene disruption (such as nonsense or frameshift mutations) and generally do not produce protein or have biological activity; although some pseudogene RNAs have been proposed to regulate other gene functions, no clear role has been established for OR4A21P[3]. Therefore, OR4A21P is primarily relevant for genomic annotation and not for therapeutic targeting or biomarker use[1][3].
