The Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily A member 3 pseudogene (OR4A3P) is a pseudogene from the large family of olfactory receptor genes. Olfactory receptors are generally G protein-coupled receptors that detect odorant molecules and initiate neuronal responses for the sense of smell. However, as a pseudogene, OR4A3P is presumed to be non-functional due to disabling mutations—meaning it does not encode a functional olfactory receptor protein. The olfactory receptor gene family contains many such pseudogenes, reflecting relaxed selective pressure on redundant or ecologically irrelevant odorant detection capabilities. There is currently no evidence or report of a functional protein product, biological function, role in disease, drug interaction, or biomarker relevance for OR4A3P[2][6].\n\nThe existence of some pseudogenes in the olfactory family being potentially functional in specific evolutionary or technical contexts has been described for other pseudogenes, but not for OR4A3P specifically[1][4].
