Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily A member 43 pseudogene (OR4A43P) is a human pseudogene of the olfactory receptor gene family. Olfactory receptors typically interact with odorant molecules in the nose, initiating neuronal responses for the perception of smell. The functional proteins in this family are G protein-coupled receptors with seven-transmembrane domains, but OR4A43P is annotated as a pseudogene, meaning it is predicted to be non-functional due to mutations that disrupt the coding sequence[3][7]. Pseudogenes commonly arise through mutations such as frame shifts or premature stop codons and do not encode active proteins[4][7]. No known biological or disease functions, drug interactions, safety concerns, or use as biomarkers are attributed to OR4A43P in humans. It is not considered a therapeutic target. While some olfactory receptor pseudogenes in other species (e.g., insects) may unexpectedly retain function due to translational readthrough of stop codons, there is no evidence that OR4A43P has such properties in humans[4][7].
