Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily A member 7 pseudogene (OR4A7P) is a human pseudogene whose sequence closely resembles that of olfactory receptor genes, which normally encode G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) mediating the recognition and transduction of odorant signals in the nose.[1][4] Unlike functional olfactory receptor genes, OR4A7P is characterized by mutations that prevent it from encoding an active receptor protein, and thus it does not participate in odorant detection or signal transduction. Pseudogenes such as OR4A7P are considered non-functional DNA elements and are not known to serve as therapeutic targets or be associated with disease roles, biological activities, or drug interactions in humans.[1][3][5] Key supporting detail: - Olfactory receptor pseudogenes arise from single-exon genes and retain sequence similarity to functional GPCRs but do not encode active receptors.[1][4] - While some pseudogenes in other species can have regulatory or rare functional roles,[3][5] there is no evidence for protein-coding function, disease association, or therapeutic targeting of OR4A7P in humans.[1][3][5]
