Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily A member 8 (OR4A8) is part of the large human olfactory receptor gene family, which encodes G protein-coupled receptors with a seven-transmembrane domain structure that is responsible for recognizing odorant molecules and mediating olfactory signal transduction. In humans, OR4A8 is classified as a segregating pseudogene, meaning that while some individuals possess a functional variant, most have a non-functional allele and thus do not express an active receptor protein[3][5][6]. Olfactory receptors as a group are not commonly associated with disease, nor do they currently serve as therapeutic targets. OR4A8 is not distinguished by any documented small molecule or drug interactions and has no known use as a biomarker in clinical practice. Its primary function, when present, would be the detection and mediation of olfactory signals, but due to pseudogenization in humans, OR4A8 does not contribute to smell perception in most individuals[3].
