Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily A member 9 pseudogene (OR4A9P) is a pseudogene in humans that is homologous to functional olfactory receptor genes, which normally encode G protein-coupled receptors involved in the detection of odorant molecules in the nose and the initiation of a neuronal response for the sense of smell. However, as a pseudogene, OR4A9P contains mutations that prevent it from producing a functional protein, and there is no evidence it plays an active biological role in olfaction or other processes. Pseudogenes like OR4A9P are common in large gene families such as olfactory receptors due to reduced selection to maintain potentially redundant chemosensory receptors[1][6][7]. There are no drugs, biomarkers, or therapeutic indications associated with OR4A9P, and it is not considered a therapeutic target[1][6][7].
