Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily C member 12 (OR4C12) is a protein-coding gene and member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which are responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nose and initiation of a neuronal response that leads to the perception of smell[3][5]. OR4C12 is classified as a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) characterized by seven transmembrane domains, a structural feature it shares with many other neurotransmitter and hormone receptors[1][3][5]. These receptors interact with odor molecules to trigger G protein-mediated signal transduction within olfactory sensory neurons. While the primary biological function of OR4C12 is in olfactory signaling, the broader family of olfactory receptors has also been observed in various non-olfactory tissues, implicating possible additional physiological or pathological roles[5]. Diseases associated with OR4C12 include prostate cancer and childhood central nervous system embryonal tumor, though specific mechanistic roles for OR4C12 itself in these diseases remain unclear[3]. There are currently no drugs or well-defined mechanisms of drug action targeting OR4C12, nor are there established uses as a biomarker or notable safety concerns described in available literature.
