Overview

**Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily C member 16** (OR4C16) is a member of the olfactory receptor family, part of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, responsible for the detection and signal transduction of odorant molecules in the nose[1][5]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR4C16 has a 7-transmembrane domain structure characteristic of GPCRs, arising from a single coding-exon gene[1]. Upon binding odorants, it initiates a neuronal response leading to the perception of smell via G protein-mediated activation of signaling pathways[1][4][5]. Importantly, this gene is a **segregating pseudogene**: some individuals have a functional allele, while others have a non-functional (pseudogene) variant[1]. While olfactory receptors as a group have minor disease associations and may indirectly influence other biological processes, OR4C16 is not known to play a prominent disease role, nor is it a current direct drug target.
