In its functional form, olfactory receptors are part of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, which are responsible for detecting odorant molecules and initiating neuronal signals related to smell. These genes are typically single-exon, encode proteins with a 7-transmembrane domain structure, and comprise the largest gene family in the human genome[1][3][5]. As a pseudogene, OR4C4P contains sequence similarity to functional olfactory receptor genes but is not expected to produce a functional protein due to debilitating mutations or disruptions within the coding sequence.
