Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily C member 5 (OR4C5) is a member of the large olfactory receptor (OR) family, which are **G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs)** responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, ultimately initiating neuronal responses that result in the perception of smell[2]. OR4C5, like most olfactory receptors, has a classic seven-transmembrane domain structure similar to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors[2]. The gene is a **segregating pseudogene**, meaning some individuals possess a functional form while others have a nonfunctional allele[2]. OR4C5 functions chiefly in **odorant signal recognition and G protein-mediated transduction** of those signals to stimulate neural pathways of olfactory perception. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome. There are currently no known drugs, therapeutic mechanisms, or specific biomarker uses associated with OR4C5, nor recognized safety concerns, and it is not widely considered to be a direct role player in disease outside of rare genetic or trait association studies[2].
