Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily E member 1 (abbreviated as OR4E1; HGNC:8296, NCBI Gene:26687, UniProtKB:P0C645) is annotated as a pseudogene in the human genome. While genes in the olfactory receptor family typically encode proteins responsible for detecting odorant molecules as part of the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily, OR4E1 is predicted to lack protein-coding function. Pseudogenes like OR4E1 do not produce functional receptors and therefore do not participate in signal transduction or odorant recognition. Olfactory receptor genes are the largest gene family in the human genome, most of which function as GPCRs that mediate the sense of smell. However, OR4E1 specifically is considered nonfunctional; there is no evidence of it acting as a therapeutic target or being involved in any biological pathways beyond its genomic presence as a pseudogene. Consequently, it does not have documented disease associations, biomarker roles, interacting drugs, or safety concerns.
