Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily E member 2 (OR4E2) is a member of the large olfactory receptor gene family in humans, encoded by the OR4E2 gene on chromosome 14[1][2][7][8]. It functions as a G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) with a canonical 7-transmembrane domain structure. OR4E2 is responsible for detecting specific odorant molecules, including organosulfur compounds such as (methylthio)methanethiol, bis(methylthiomethyl) disulfide, cis-cyclooctene, and tert-butyl mercaptan, in the nasal epithelium. Upon odorant binding, OR4E2 activates intracellular G proteins, initiating a signal transduction cascade that leads to the perception of smell. Olfactory receptors like OR4E2 are expressed primarily in olfactory sensory neurons and are not known to have direct roles in other physiological processes or diseases. The gene family is the largest in the genome, and the nomenclature is organism-specific[1][2][7][8].
