Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily F member 16 (OR4F16) is a protein-coding gene that belongs to the large family of olfactory receptors, which are classified as G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) featuring seven transmembrane domains. These receptors are primarily responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating neuronal responses that result in the perception of smell. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, reflecting their biological importance in chemosensation. OR4F16 shares structural characteristics with other GPCRs, including neurotransmitter and hormone receptors, and mediates signal transduction via G protein activation. There is some evidence associating OR4F16 with rare neurological syndromes, but it is not currently a recognized therapeutic drug target or clinical biomarker. The molecular function is conserved within the olfactory family, and specific ligand interactions for OR4F16 have not been fully characterized.
