Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily F member 17 (OR4F17) is a protein coding gene that encodes an olfactory receptor, which is a member of the large G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily[1][5]. These receptors are responsible for the recognition of odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell[1][2][3]. Like other olfactory receptors, OR4F17 has a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure and mediates its effects by G protein signaling[1][2][3][5]. Olfactory receptor genes constitute the largest gene family in the human genome[1][7]. OR4F17 is primarily involved in sensory signal transduction but may have broader physiological roles, as emerging studies reveal ectopic expression of olfactory receptors in non-olfactory tissues, including cancers[7]. Specific disease association for OR4F17 is limited, but it is mapped as associated with Cardiofaciocutaneous Syndrome 4[1]. There is currently no established role for OR4F17 as a therapeutic target, interacting drug, or clinical biomarker.
