Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily F member 3 (OR4F3) is a member of the olfactory receptor superfamily, which is composed of single coding-exon genes encoding G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) with a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure[3][6]. These receptors are responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating a neuronal response that triggers the perception of smell[3][5][6]. They function by recognizing a broad but selective spectrum of volatile small molecules, mainly through hydrophobic and van der Waals interactions rather than classical ionic or hydrogen bonds typical of many other GPCRs[1]. Olfactory receptors are the largest gene family in the human genome, and OR4F3’s gene, protein, and nomenclature are specific to humans[5]. There is currently no significant evidence supporting its use as a therapeutic target, biomarker, or its interaction with drugs. However, variants and expression differences in olfactory receptors, in general, may contribute to the diversity of human olfactory perception[1][3][6].
