Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily F member 4 (OR4F4) is a gene in the human genome belonging to the large olfactory receptor gene family, which usually encodes G protein-coupled receptors responsible for odorant detection. OR4F4, however, is annotated as a pseudogene in humans and does not produce a functional protein. In general, olfactory receptors possess a characteristic seven-transmembrane domain structure and mediate odorant signal transduction through G-protein pathways, but OR4F4 is not active as a receptor in humans. Other olfactory receptor family members may play roles in olfactory sensation, but OR4F4 itself is not a molecular target for drugs, research, or therapy in humans. If functional, such receptors would participate in odorant recognition, G-protein mediated signaling, and potentially contribute to physiological behaviors related to sense of smell. However, OR4F4's pseudogene status precludes these roles. There appear to be frequent confusion and overlap in naming among olfactory receptor subfamily members; only those that encode a protein product are considered true molecular targets.
