Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily F member 5 (OR4F5) is a member of the olfactory receptor family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) that are responsible for the detection of odorant molecules in the nose, initiating the neuronal response that results in the perception of smell. It encodes a protein that contains a characteristic 7-transmembrane domain structure found in many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. OR4F5 is encoded by a single coding-exon gene located on chromosome 1, and is notable for being the first protein-coding gene on this chromosome. Although critical for olfactory function, OR4F5 does not have established roles in disease, nor are there known drugs or biomarkers associated with it; it is primarily involved in sensory physiological processes rather than therapeutic targeting[1][2][3][4][5][9].
