Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily F member 8 pseudogene (OR4F8P) is a pseudogene classified among the human olfactory receptor gene family[2]. Olfactory receptors are traditionally responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose, initiating a neuronal response for smell perception, and structurally belong to the G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily with seven transmembrane domains[2][3]. However, as a pseudogene, OR4F8P is not believed to code for a functional protein, and thus does not play an active biological or therapeutic role[2][4]. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, with many pseudogenes reflecting relaxed evolutionary pressures[4]. There are rare examples of pseudogenes possessing residual or regulatory roles, but no established function exists for this locus; consequently, it is not considered a drug or therapeutic target[2][4].
