Overview

Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily H member 6 pseudogene (OR4H6P) is a member of the large human olfactory receptor gene family, but is categorized as a pseudogene, meaning it contains mutations that prevent it from encoding a functional olfactory receptor protein. Olfactory receptor (OR) genes typically encode G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) responsible for detecting odorant molecules in the nose and initiating neuronal signals involved in the sense of smell. The olfactory receptor family is the largest gene family in the human genome, with a high proportion of pseudogenes. OR4H6P, as a pseudogene, does not contribute to olfaction or other known biological processes, has no known interacting ligands or drugs, and is not considered a therapeutic target[3]. The olfactory receptor gene superfamily in humans includes both numerous functional genes and an even greater number of pseudogenes. According to recent estimates, there are 390 putatively functional olfactory receptor genes and 465 pseudogenes in humans[3]. The “H” subfamily of family 4 olfactory receptors includes both functional genes and pseudogenes; OR4H6P is listed as one of the pseudogenes of this group[3]. Pseudogenes like OR4H6P are not capable of coding functional proteins, often due to frame-shift mutations or premature stop codons, and are not considered meaningful targets for therapeutic development[3].
