Olfactory receptor family 4 subfamily K member 15 is a human olfactory receptor involved in the sense of smell. It is a member of the large family of olfactory receptors, which belong to the class A G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) and share a seven-transmembrane domain structure with many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors. OR4K15 interacts with odorant molecules in the nasal epithelium, initiating G-protein-mediated neuronal signaling that leads to the perception of odors. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the human genome, with each receptor arising from single coding-exon genes. While most research focuses on olfactory function, recent studies suggest some olfactory receptors have roles in extranasal tissues and might be implicated in nonolfactory physiological processes. There are no known drugs or clinical biomarkers for OR4K15, and it is not currently implicated in major disease processes.
